Pillar Support Coordination is here to help shine the light on the NDIS and give you a better understanding of how the program works.

What is the NDIS?

The Australian Federal Government launched the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) in 2013 to support Australians who have a permanent and significant disability by giving them choice and control over the supports they receive. The NDIS invests in people with disability to help them live and enjoy their lives over their lifetimes.

What does NDIS mean?

N – National
The NDIS is available across Australia.

D – Disability
Eligible Australians with intellectual, physical, sensory, cognitive, and psychosocial disability may receive NDIS support. Furthermore, eligible individuals with disability or children with developmental delays may access early intervention support.

I – Insurance
The NDIS is designed to give Australians with permanent or significant disability the assurance that they will get the support they need.

S – Scheme
The NDIS is not designed to be a payment system. Instead, it is designed to assist individuals in getting the supports they need, providing them with the resources to improve their autonomy, skills and wellbeing.

What does the NDIS do?

The NDIS provides funding to individuals with permanent and significant disability to receive the assistance and services they need to live their best life. Every successful NDIS participant has an individual plan specifically tailored to their short and long-term goals/aspirations, specific caring needs and funding.

How does the NDIS work?

The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) is the independent government organisation that runs the NDIS. Click here to learn more about the NDIA and the NDIS and where you fit in.

Understanding your plan

Where possible, the NDIS allows you to have as much choice and control over the support and funding received in your NDIS plan. Your Local Area Coordinators (LAC) or NDIS Support Coordinators will help you start your NDIS plan.

What is Support Coordination?

Support coordination assists eligible NDIS participants to maximise their NDIS plan.
Support coordination is a capacity-building support service that helps you to:

  • Understand and use your NDIS plan to pursue your goals
  • Connect you with different NDIS providers to assist you in achieving your goals.
